Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening
Question: Why do my teeth become stained?
Answer: Multiple factors can account for your stained teeth. For example, poor oral hygiene, or a diet with a lot of sugary foods and drinks, can promote plaque buildup. The plaque can make stains more likely to appear. In addition, drinks with dark pigments, such as tea, red wine, soda, and coffee, can also discolor your teeth. Finally, smoking and other tobacco products can leave discoloration on your smile.
Question: How do you remove discoloration?
Answer: We can send the patients home with a set of trays and a bleaching gel. The patient simply adds gel to the trays and wears them every day for about one to two weeks. They will typically wear them for a half hour to 45 minutes per day. In some cases, smiles can be brightened by multiple shades.
Question: What if I have intrinsic teeth stains?
Answer: Intrinsic stains, also known as permanent discoloration, occur below the tooth enamel instead of on the surface of the teeth. They can be caused by injury to the tooth, fluorosis, or tetracycline exposure at a young age. Trays and gel can often address minor intrinsic stains, but we may need to mask more serious cases with veneers or bonding.
Question: How do I keep my teeth bright after treatment?
Answer: Simple! You can prolong your results by cutting back on sugary foods and drinks, consuming fewer drinks with dark pigments, brushing and flossing regularly, and seeing us every six months for a checkup and cleaning.
