Do you have a missing tooth? Have you been to the dentist yet to have your tooth replaced? Many people don’t realize that delaying the necessary dental care to restore a missing tooth endangers the surrounding teeth. In today’s blog, your Albuquerque dentist, Dr. Mark Miller, explains how dental implants can provide permanent tooth replacement and preserve your smile.
A dental implant enables Dr. Miller to replace one or more missing teeth. Dental implants can provide a lifetime of strong, esthetically pleasing dental restorations.
When a patient loses a tooth, their body immediately stops supplying the area of the jawbone around the missing tooth with calcium and phosphorus. Starved of these vital nutrients, the bone begins to dissolve. Over time, the loss of jawbone density affects the stability of surrounding teeth. In addition, the adjacent teeth may begin to drift towards the empty tooth socket, causing misalignment. This increases the risk of further tooth loss.
To receive dental implants, first, schedule a consultation with Dr. Miller. After performing a thorough oral examination, Dr. Miller will decide if dental implants are the best choice for repairing your smile. In some cases, patients who don’t have the jawbone density to support implants may require a bone graft. The next step involves placing a special titanium post into the socket. After placing the post, Dr. Miller will wait three to six months for the area to heal and the bone tissue to bond with the post. This process resumes the flow of nutrients to the bone, preserving your smile. Once the healing period has ended, Dr. Miller will put a custom-made crown on top of the post. When you leave our practice, you will have a durable and natural-looking restoration.
