One of the leading complaints about dentures is how insecure they can fit in the mouth. Over time, the friction between the dentures and gum ridges will cause even the best-fitted set of dentures to become loose, forcing a never-ending series of denture refittings. However, there is an alternative. Instead of being placed on top of the gums, dentures can instead be attached to dental implants. Implant-attached dentures provide years of strength and stability. Your Albuquerque dentist, Dr. Mark Miller, explains the implant procedure and what that can mean for your dentures and quality of life.
An implant is a titanium pin inserted directly into the socket that formally contained a tooth. This pin will help keep the jawbone fully healthy. Often, a permanent crown will be placed onto the implant pin, but implants can also be used as connection points for a set of partial or complete dentures.
Lower dentures are usually placed directly on the gums. They are typically contoured to fit the ridges and bumps that make up the floor of the patient’s gums and are then sealed into place with a denture adhesive. In addition to the irritation caused as the dentures rub against the gums, the friction will eventually wear away some of the contours of the gums, so they need to be relined. Implant-attached dentures, on the other hand, are attached to implant pins. Implant-attached dentures can even be connected permanently, meaning the daily task of taking them out and cleaning them is replaced by normal brushing and flossing. While dentures are not subject to tooth decay, of course, gum-damaging plaque can still coat the surface of the denture, so maintaining normal hygiene is very important.
