Did you know the foods and drinks we consume may lead to discoloration? Sugary foods and drinks may leave behind particles on and between the teeth, which bacteria will break down and consume. In the process, this could cause plaque buildup to occur, which makes stains more apparent. In addition, drinking beverages with dark pigments, such as tea, coffee, red wine, and soda, could also stain your smile. Other causes of discoloration may include smoking or tobacco use, fluorosis, or exposure to tetracycline at a young age.
In order to remove stains, we begin by taking detailed impressions of your smile. We use these impressions to create a set of trays from a comfortable acrylic material. Next, we prescribe a powerful bleaching gel. At home, you will place gel into the trays and wear them for about 30 to 45 minutes per day. The trays help spread the gel evenly across the teeth and hold it in place as the bleaching ingredients break up discoloration. The full treatment period takes about one week to ten days to complete. For some, smiles can be brightened by multiple shades. If during your initial exam we find you have severe discoloration that may not respond well to teeth whitening, we may discuss masking stains with veneers or dental bonding.
Following treatment, remember that you keep the trays and any remaining gel, which can be used for touch-ups down the road. Also, routine home care is essential for combating plaque buildup and teeth stains. Each day, you should brush your teeth in the morning and again at night for two minutes per session. You should also floss before going to bed as well. Making time for teeth cleanings every six moth also helps brighten teeth.
