Are you thinking about choosing dental implants to replace your missing teeth? If so, you have probably learned some very interesting facts about this extremely stable, long-lasting dental prosthetic option. However, you may be wondering about the day-to-day existence when it comes to implants. For instance, are they easy to care for? Or, are they extremely difficult to care for? Before you run for the hills because you assume such a wonderful treatment must require a lot of upkeep, we encourage you to look over the following myths and facts to clear up any confusion you may have about what to expect:
Myth: You don’t need to clean your restorations if you have dental implants since they are made out of artificial materials.
Fact: Not true. You will still need to care for your smile. The material may be artificial but the tissue surrounding it is organic. This means that you will still be at risk for problems like infection and gum disease. Keeping your smile clean will allow you to keep your implants for many years to come.
Myth: You will need to buy a lot of special instruments to care for your implants.
Fact: You won’t need to buy anything special at all. In fact, we instruct patients to care for their implant restorations the same way we do for natural teeth. You will need a soft-bristle toothbrush, nonabrasive toothpaste, and dental floss. Brush two times a day for two minutes per brushing session. Then, make sure you floss once a day.
Myth: Dental implant restorations will break easily, so you will need to avoid eating crunchy foods.
Fact: Your restorations are extremely durable, just like your natural teeth. If there’s something you would usually avoid with a set of natural teeth – avoid it for implants, too. For instance, chewing on ice each day is not a great idea. Enjoying your usual diet, however, is just fine.
