You understand that preventive dentistry protects your oral health, which is why you brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once. These actions, of course, are what make up your home care and what keep your teeth healthy between your six-month checkups and cleanings. But have you ever stopped to ask yourself whether you could be brushing better? Or, perhaps you brush quite well but you could be using a more effective toothbrush. Since your goal is to do the best you can in-home dental hygiene to safeguard your smile, we encourage you to consider the following suggestions so you see the greatest results from your hard work:
Of course, when you are cleaning a surface your first instinct is to choose something that will get the job done. While you may have the desire to reach for a medium- or hard-bristled toothbrush, you will be doing yourself a disservice. Your best bet is actually to select soft bristles. With the repeated motion of brushing, you will be able to remove plaque and debris from your teeth without damaging their outermost layer, called enamel.
Dedication is a wonderful tool, but we encourage you to use it for excellent brushing habits alone – not toward holding onto the same toothbrush for too long. Replace that brush once every three months or once it starts looking a bit run down. They tend to harbor germs, which is something your teeth and gums could do without.
You may not always have time to do a wonderful job, but we hope you do your best to set aside time for successful brushing. How much time? Two minutes for each brushing session, at least twice a day. Follow these suggestions and enjoy the greatest oral health you can achieve.
