Did you know that the arrival of your wisdom teeth could mean serious complications for your smile’s health and appearance? In order to prevent these complications, we offer a safe and comfortable extraction. In today’s blog, we’re looking at how we extract teeth and when our Albuquerque, NM, patients should talk to us about wisdom teeth solutions.
Our wisdom teeth arrive in our late teens to early 20s. For some, this could mean up to four additional teeth erupting. Serious complications may then arise. If the teeth are unable to completely erupt, they may become impacted, which causes discomfort. People could also experience toothaches, infections, and even misalignment. As the alignment of your smile changes, you may experience an increased risk of tooth decay, gum disease, TMJ disorder, and even bruxism (teeth grinding).
To help safeguard smiles against these potential changes, we often suggest removing them before they erupt. To ensure the patient feels comfortable, we may administer a local anesthetic and discuss sedation dentistry, which helps patients enter a calm and relaxed state. You will have little to no memory of the procedure afterward. After we remove the teeth, we will discuss aftercare. You may need to avoid certain foods and take medications as the extraction site heals.
Obviously, we don’t need to replace your wisdom teeth. But we may extract teeth for other reasons. For example, if a tooth experiences a serious infection or becomes damaged, or if you have advanced gum disease develop that causes a tooth to become loose, then we may need to extract them. Since these circumstances will leave behind a gap in your smile, then we can talk about possible replacement options. We may address minor tooth loss with a bridge, which replaces between one and three missing teeth in a row. For advanced tooth loss, a full or partial denture may restore the function and appearance of your smile. For a long lasting and secure tooth replacement option, we could place a dental implant, or use multiple dental implants to secure a bridge or denture. If you have any questions about extraction, or about replacing missing teeth, then please contact our team today. We want to help you enjoy optimal oral health!
