As recently as a few decades ago, people assumed that dentures were inevitable as they reached their senior years. This isn’t true for today, and adults are keeping their natural teeth longer – often for a lifetime. A healthy mouth with natural teeth conveys a youthful appearance, allows you to eat your favorite foods, and lets you speak clearly and confidently. As a member of the baby boomer generation, Albuquerque dentist Dr. Mark Miller understands and respects the need to retain a youthful appearance and high quality of life far beyond previous generations. In addition to providing family dental care, he offers comprehensive cosmetic and restorative dentistry to address some of the most common dental problems to people over 50.
Unhealthy bacteria in the mouth can harm your teeth and gums and may indicate serious medical conditions. Research has shown that infections in the mouth may be associated with heart disease, stroke, diabetes, pneumonia, and other health problems that are common in older adults. You can deter many health problems by maintaining a healthy mouth.
An effective dental care regimen is simple. Brush your teeth two or three times a day, floss daily, and use an oral rinse. A healthy, balanced diet can greatly benefit your dental health, as well. Remain aware of what’s happening in your mouth. Perform monthly self-exams for oral cancer, checking your lips, gums, tongue (don’t forget the underside of your tongue), and the insides of your cheeks for bumps, sores, or discolorations. Most sores are noncancerous, but if you have a sore that doesn’t heal within two weeks, make an appointment for an examination by Dr. Miller. Finally, keep up with your schedule of twice-yearly check-ups and cleanings, and follow through with dental treatment plans.
Aging inevitably brings changes in your appearance. Like most people, you will probably experience tooth discoloration, which makes you look older. There’s a remedy for this, however: Tooth whitening is an easy and effective way to take years off your appearance. For teeth that don’t respond to chemical whitening, dental bonding or porcelain veneers may be a viable option.
As a cosmetic and restorative dentist, Dr. Miller provides a number of services to improve your smile and health, long into your retirement years.
