2019 is running out! Thanksgiving is around the corner, and Christmas is right on its heels. Which means if you want to schedule your final checkup and cleaning of the year, you should contact your Albuquerque, NM, dentist today. Our team would like to explain how a simple preventive visit can help protect your smile throughout the year!
Let’s start with the dental exam. A routine checkup every six months allow us to keep an eye on your smile and watch for any changes that could indicate the presence of an oral health concern. We will look at the teeth for indicators of tooth decay or infection, and the wear and friction that could identify the presence of TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding). The exam also includes a look at the gums to identify gingivitis or gum disease, treating them before they can lead to tooth loss and discomfort. We also perform screenings for oral cancer. You should have one every six months, so we identify possible areas of concern and treat them before serious complications arise.
We’ll also clean your teeth in the same visit. A dental cleaning mean removing all plaque and tartar from the teeth, as brushing and flossing alone cannot remove plaque and tartar. We use an ultrasonic scaler and manual tool to accomplish this, and then polish the teeth for a brighter appearance and smoother finish. The process only takes a few minutes, but is crucial for keeping your smile free of cavities and periodontal disease. If you do have gingivitis or the early stages of gum disease, then we may perform a deep cleaning, in which we remove plaque from both the teeth and the surfaces of the roots.
We will also discuss how you can better care for your smile at home. For example, you should brush your teeth for two minutes when you wake up and again before going to bed, each time using a toothbrush with soft bristles and a toothpaste that contains fluoride. You also need to floss up and down the length of each side of every tooth before going to bed. Also, be sure you watch your consumption of sugary and starchy foods, especially around the holidays, as these items could promote cavities and poor gum health. If you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like you to schedule a visit, then contact our team today.
