When we help our patients in Albuquerque, NM, enjoy more attractive smiles, we do so with a full range of cosmetic treatment options. In addition to teeth whitening and other more well-known systems, we also have the ability to contour both the teeth and gums, addressing issues that threaten the appearance and health of your smile, often in a single visit.
For some people, the presence of excessive gum tissues could impact the smile’s appearance. The excess tissue could make the teeth appear small and uneven, or the person may just display too much gum when smiling. A “gummy smile” can be a source of embarrassment for some. In order to correct this issue, we may prescribe a gum contouring procedure. Simply put, the treatment involves carefully and safely removing the excess tissue after we administer a local anesthetic. We then have the ability to reshape the gumline and ensure excess tissue doesn’t cause negative impacts on your appearance. We will then provide detailed instructions for the healing period that follows. We may even combine the treatment with other cosmetic options, such as professional teeth whitening.
We also offer a different contouring option, this one targeted at your teeth. If you have chipped or misshapen teeth, pointed teeth, or issues with grooves or pits in the surface of your smile, then we may perform x-rays to assess the teeth’s strength and durability. Next, we employ abrasive strips, a sanding drill, and even advanced dental lasers to shave away small amounts of surface structure, reshaping the tooth gently and carefully. We can correct the tooth’s shape and improve a number of cosmetic issues, all in a single sitting. The next step is polishing the tooth, which helps offer a more esthetically pleasing appearance.
We may combine these options with one or more treatments. For example, dental bonding, another single visit treatment option, is often performed in conjunction with tooth contouring. We can also whiten teeth prior to treatment or discuss cosmetic restorations, such as thin porcelain veneers, to address portions of your smile that require multiple esthetic treatments.
