Did you know that the Summer Solstice for the Northern Hemisphere in 2014 occurs on 21 June at 10:51 UTC? That means summer is just around the corner, and what better way to start the season off than a dental checkup and cleaning? Similar in other medical fields, dentists prefer to practice prevention rather than reaction. The concept is similar to applying sunblock to your skin prior to spending hours in the sun. It’s there to protect your skin and prevent you from burning. Preventive dentistry works the same way, and Dr. Miller would like to prompt you to schedule a dental visit to ensure you’re maintaining optimum oral health.
What is preventive dentistry?
Maintaining good oral health involves a number of variables that revolve around at-home, in-office, and congenital oral hygiene practices.
At-home oral hygiene habits involve brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing at least once a day. It also involves caring correctly for your toothbrush and preventing bacteria and virus contamination.
Your in-office prevention involves attending regular dental checkups and cleanings as recommended by Dr. Miller. Each patient is different and may need to visit less or more depending on their oral health status.
If you suffer from congenital conditions that indirectly or directly affect your oral health, special treatment practices may be suggested for you to maintain good oral health.
What happens during a dental checkup and cleaning at Snow Park Dental?
A dental checkup and cleaning will occur in two phases:
The first phase involves Dr. Miller studying your overall health history in accordance with a thorough examination of your oral cavity. Your doctor will also screen for oral cancer and may request x-rays for further exploration of your mouth.
The second phase involves removing any accumulated plaque or tartar on or between your teeth and along your gumline. Your hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth to ensure maximum prevention of any future formation of periodontal disease or dental caries.
How will someone benefit from regular dental office visits?
Even though you may brush thoroughly and floss with the intention of removing every spec of plaque, you cannot reach everything. Something will be missed, and your doctor will be able to identify lingering disease, infection, or oral cancer prior to severe symptoms surfacing.
