With cooler temperatures across the country, you are likely to reach for a hot coffee sooner than you would an iced tooth. However, when you have sensitive teeth, neither extreme beverage is likely to be a pleasant experience. Any consumable which is extremely cold, sour, sweet, or hot will likely cause people with sensitive teeth to pucker or grimace in discomfort. Would you like to figure out what might be causing your tooth sensitivity?
All healthy teeth are comprised of pulp (AKA roots) dentin, and covered in enamel. Dentin is responsible for transmitting sensations to your nerves below the gumline. When enamel is compromised due to acids and tooth decay, sensitivity can become much more intense. Your gums also act as protection for the roots of your pearly whites. If you have notably sensitive teeth, you are likely a victim of some degree of dentin exposure and gum recession.
If you become overzealous and assume that ramping up your regular brushing routine will make your teeth all the healthier, make sure you strike a balance. True, periodontal disease and cavities are direct results of poor dental hygiene habits and this does put you at a higher risk for sensitive teeth. But the same is true if you brush too often, or too hard. Timing for brushing can be important as well. Yes, it’s a good idea to brush your teeth after consuming a sugary soft drink, for example, but the acid from the drink can temporarily soften enamel. Waiting for 30 minutes so that the enamel has a chance to recover from the erosive substance. This will help keep teeth healthy and less sensitive to temperature extremes.
