Sometimes, it’s so miniscule that you might not even realize it. But sometimes, your jaw may pop so forcefully and continuously that you can’t ignore the discomfort. If the condition has gotten that bad, then it’s likely the result of TMJ disorder – a dysfunction in one or both of your jaw’s joints. The best way to treat TMJ disorder and stop your jaws from popping is to visit your dentist as soon as possible to find out why your jaw isn’t working correctly.
TMJ disorder, or temporomandibular joint disorder, is a collective name, and can describe any condition that affects your jaw joints’ ability to operate properly. This can mean a dislocated disk, inflammation in the joint, arthritis, and more. If your jaw’s joints don’t move in tandem, they can pop as they situate themselves every time you open and close your bite.
The problem with TMJ disorder is that it can be caused by a wide variety of reasons, and treating it means addressing its specific cause. If your jaws are overtaxed because your teeth are crooked, then orthodontic treatment may be in order. If your bite equilibrium is off because of worn teeth surfaces, then bite equilibration may be your best option.
For many people, however, relief from popping jaws and TMJ disorder can be found with a custom-designed oral appliance. The appliance is designed to hold the jaw comfortably while you sleep so the joints can relax and heal themselves. Depending on your specific needs, an oral appliance may be the only solution you need, or it may be combined with one or more procedures to correct your bite’s balance.
